this week

August 30 - September 5, 2010

Pastor

This week's scripture verse: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." " - Jesus (Matthew 5:3 NIV).

I think the big takeaway from life might be something like this . . . we really need God. More than we think. Maybe even more than we want to. Yet, the life story of people who have been most blessed by God and used by God is that they kept themselves vitally in touch with their need for Him. This is the essence of what it is to be "poor in spirit."

What's dependence upon God look like for you this week? Do you need Him to parent well? Rebuild a relationship? Maintain Christ's character in a stressful setting? Find a job? Find healing? Face deployment and separation? Represent Christ effectively to those who don't yet know Him? Learn how to pray? Finish what you begin? Ask for forgiveness from those you have hurt?

People who know God most deeply and have served Him most effectively - people like the blind poet and songwriter Fanny Crosby - have made this their bedrock truth in life. They learned that the best moments in life are those somewhat scary moments when our needs seem the most acute. Could it be that God deliberately sends some of those moments our way so that we'll learn to live in active dependence upon Him?

This week, press into your need for God and depend upon Him. This is what He's been looking for all along.

Saturday, September 18 at 6:00 PM

Set your sights (and your calendars) on Saturday, September 18 at 6:00 pm. Hymnfest III is right around the corner. Once again our Celebration Choir and Orchestra, along with the Faithful Men, will come together for an evening of enthusiastic hymn singing.

We'll have some special arrangements from our choirs, but this is primarily a time for you, the congregation, to become "the biggest choir in Hampton Roads"! In the past, we've asked for special requests, and you've responded. So, we'll be working a few of your favorites into the evening's festivities. Join us, as together we sing some of the great hymns of the faith. And consider inviting a friend to share the fun!

Wednesdays, starting September 8 7-9 PM in the Fellowship Hall

If you or your friends are asking "life's big questions," Alpha explores the meaning of life and the Christian faith in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course meets weekly and includes an amazing weekend retreat. Each session includes food, fun, and learning in a friendly setting where no question about life or God is too simple or too hostile. Be sure to bring a friend!

Sign up in the KPC lobby, email Linda Harrison or call her at 495-1913 ext. 230.

Keeping in touch, covering them in prayer . . .

If you're one of our precious military families, did you know we have special military "benefits" at KPC? We'd love to know who you are so we can pray for you. We can add your service member to our Chaplain's Report, which is updated weekly and forwarded to Intercessors here and around the world so we can cover your loved ones in prayer. We can also mail sermon CD's to service members at their duty stations so they can always be in touch with their home church.

If you need someone who understands the military life, please call or email Kathy, our prayer liaison and former military spouse. She's ready to pray for you! And for sermon CD's, please call or email Linda. It's our privilege to serve you!

Let's DO lunch, and we really mean it!

For our guests and for those newer to KPC, our Pizza with the Pastor luncheon is our way of welcoming you to KPC. It's a place for you to find out more about our lead pastor, Nate Atwood, get to know many on staff at KPC, and ask those questions you may have about our church. We'll spend a short time with you, feed you and your family well, and then send you off to enjoy the rest of your Sunday afternoon.

Here are the details:
Pizza with the Pastor is on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Bring your entire family or a guest. If you get a chance to RSVP or have questions, you can do that by emailing Chris. FYI: We encourage our seasoned KPCers to accompany their guests and enjoy lunch with them.

A Worthy Cause Needs Your Help!

On behalf of children who rely on KPC for school supplies, we're requesting your help again this year. We'll be covering basic school needs for Trailer City and for kids right here at KPC. Joy Ministries and the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center's Kids Club will benefit too!

To support this wonderful ministry, check out our "needs list" below. Then, place your donations in the designated box in the church lobby. (Please keep it neat!) We also need volunteers to prepare bags for the kids. Stop by the School Supply table in the KPC lobby, email Henry Justis, or call 321-0102 for more ways to help.

Needed School Supplies (per child)
1 pkg. ink pens black)
1 box crayons (16 or more)
1 pkg. watercolor markers or full-size colored pencils
1 pkg. assorted highlighters
1 pencil/supply pouch
1 pkg. 4x6 index cards
2 glue sticks
2 pkg. 200-sheet loose-leaf paper
1 pair student scissors (round tips)or hole-punch
1 standard box tissues
1 hand-held stapler
1 backpack (inexpensive)

This list is intended as a guide, but please don't let it limit you. Whether it's one or more items, every donation helps and is appreciated! Life Groups, please consider blessing a child by providing all items on the list.

Thank you for your support and thoughtful giving to help this wonderful cause.

Fall Classes
Sunday mornings
SEPT 12-NOV 28

Financial Peace Univ.
Facilitator:
Ron McKinney
Time: 9-11AM
Place: Celebration

Dave Ramsey's upbeat and relevant videos teach you how to save money, live on a budget, eliminate debt, and experience the joy of giving. Practical discussion follows each session. There's a fee for materials (find out details in class), but we think you'll agree... financial peace is priceless! Attend a FREE promo-class on Aug 29.

"Where It All Began"
Time: 9:30-10:30 AM
Place: Rooms A1&2
Teacher: Reed Sprague

In this study of Genesis, we'll explore God's magnificent creation and His foundations for our Christian faith. Topics in this most fascinating book include creation, original sin, God's discipline, the flood, and His plan for redemption. And that's only the beginning! Don't miss out. Register in class!

"A Life Worth Living"
Time: 11AM-Noon
Place: Rooms A1&2
Teacher: Jodie Chiricosta

We all want to hear the words found in Matthew 25:21, "Well done good and faithful servant...come and share in your master's happiness." We'll explore what the Bible says about our purpose for living and how that impacts our priorities in every area of life. Understand more fully our awesome Heavenly Father and discover the joy and blessing of simple obedience. Be intentional in pleasing the Lord!

The Truth Project
Time: 11AM-Noon
Place: Celebration Wing
Teachers: David Bottorff and Roger Pence

Research shows that those inside and outside the Church live very similar lives. We rarely experience a sense of significance, often spend time and money on things that don't satisfy, and wonder about life's ultimate purpose. We're losing our bearings as a people and a nation. The Truth Project is designed to counter this slide. Lessons focus living out the Christian worldview in daily life.
