Prepared To Serve

Chaplaincy

Scripture reveals the amazing truth of God's dominion and intent for human life—even prior to conception. Weaving circumstances both good and bad into a cohesive testament to His Sovereignty, He works His plan for each life with the goal of blessing us and others through us. If there's a better example of this than the life of Mike Nowitzky, we're hard pressed to think of one.

As a KPC Chaplaincy team captain, Mike fills in for Chaplaincy Director Vic Hildebrand whenever needed.

Vic will tell you, Mike is the administrative heart of Chaplaincy ministry. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. How God prepared Mike for the role is the real story.

After TCC business courses, Mike earned a diploma in biblical studies from a seminary in Louisville, KY. During a successful career in auto sales as general manager for a local firm, Mike served as deacon chairman and Sunday school teacher for a Baptist church before coming to KPC. Skilled at building community, his Sunday school group was more like family than formal classroom. His investment in their lives proved invaluable, and when a time of crisis came, they were there for him as he had been for them.

During a torrential rain storm in 2003, while returning from a family event in NC, the Nowitzky's car hydroplaned and crashed tragically killing Mike's wife but mercifully leaving his son unscathed. In a coma for 11 days, Mike was hospitalized for almost a month and a half. After the ordeal, Mike sensed God had spared his life for a specific purpose. The outcome was Mike's single-hearted attitude to serve the vulnerable and forgotten.

Not wanting to lose Mike as a valued employee, his boss graciously offered extended time off or part-time work until Mike was back on his feet. But Mike was determined to dedicate himself full-time to ministry. With substantial severance pay, Mike finished seminary and continued his involvement in rehab ministry, primarily to seniors, which he's participated in since 1993.

Every Thursday, he ministers at local rehab centers, including Oakwood Nursing Home, as part of KPC's local outreach ministry. Mike knows everyone there. With humor and a warm, personal approach, he shares Scripture and an uplifting message with residents. "Every Christian's a winner when God's love lives inside them. God has something for everyone to do, even seniors in nursing homes. Find out what it is and do it with joy." Through song and prayer, he encourages purpose in the lives of marginalized seniors and shut-ins. You might say he was perfectly made for the job! And a perfect fit for KPC Chaplaincy.
